note to self : don’t interrupt FileVault

Posted by Dick on December 17, 2007

I enabled FileVault on my MBP and cancelled the conversion when I saw how long it was going to take. When I tried to re-enable it again today, I got an error saying

could not create filevault disk image

Google wasn’t very helpful, so I’m noting down the fix here, which is:

sudo rm -r /Users/Shared/username.sparsebundle

Turns out FileVault doesn’t use encrypted .dmgs(because they’re fixed size) but instead has a directory called username.sparsebundle (.sparseimage, pre-Leopard) that does the same job. This is initially created as /Users/shared/username.sparsebundle ,populated and only moved into place once the old home directory is deleted.

So, SFA came through with my birthday present.

Sweet Zombie Jesus.

I now have slightly under 3 months to somehow match this:

(thanks to setantae who nicely covered the worst case scenario and bab who arranged a getaway just in case)

live and learn

some things I learnt this holiday

  • depp > wilder
  • blotches don’t need a reason
  • de caprio can act
  • 4 square foot of wall produces an inordinate amount of plaster if you hit it right
  • magnadoodle > etch-a-sketch
  • it’s not quicker by train
  • Tarquin should have paid up
  • shitty wallpaper generally hides an even shittier wall
  • jerkily animated woodpeckers aren’t creepy if you’re 2
  • the public will hate you for having sex twice, but it’s ok to run away and lie when a coke-stuffed corpse is found in your pool
  • sqlite is still the ginger stepchild of connection adapters
  • there’s a reason the Goodies aren’t back on telly
  • gin is fattening

Happy New Year to all both our readers.

If anyone else is proxying to a typo blog on lighttpd 1.4 from apache 2 and having horribly long (30sec+, but not DNS-related) delays on the admin screens (everywhere is slow, just /admin/ is ridiculous), add

server.max-keep-alive-requests = 0

to your lighttpd.conf. (Didn’t seem to need it on 1.3.x. )

mod_proxys docs explain how to disable keepalive on the apache end, but that’s not an option on textdrive.

Anyway, 1.4 flies now. Thank you Joseph
.

Last night my car was broken into, and my 2-year-old daughter poured blackcurrant squash into my laptop, but at least something is improving :)

UPDATE:

  • It’s a known issue with redirect_to(), and fixed in lighttpd SVN (though not 1.4.4 sadly) .
  • the laptop seems to have dried out
  • our insurance company are awesome

Rasputnik’s Law

“Any crazy rumour about Google will turn out to be true within six months weeks”.

I heard Google were building their own Internet. (I also looked at GoogleWatch, who seem to think ’we might show that donkey porn email from Bin Laden to the feds’ is a) surprising or b) at all relevant when talking about messages sent by SMTP. The two were pretty indistinguishable on the CrankOMeter. )

Then today the Great Gate opens and out rolls skynet .

I love the cheerful image / terrifying resources of the GoogleTron Empire , almost as much as I like their webmail interface.

I am still hopeful this Law only holds within LEO. We’ll see .
